چکیده

We propose an approach to the synthesis of hierarchical control systems comprising both evolved and manually programmed control for autonomous robots. We recursively divide the goal task into subtasks until a solution can be evolved or until a solution can easily be programmed by hand. Hierarchical composition of behavior allows us to overcome the fundamental challenges that typically prevent evolutionary robotics from being applied to complex tasks: bootstrapping the evolutionary process, avoiding deception, and successfully transferring control evolved in simulation to real robotic hardware. We demonstrate the proposed approach by synthesizing control systems for two tasks whose complexity is beyond state of the art in evolutionary robotics. The first task is a rescue task in which all behaviors are evolved. The second task is a cleaning task in which evolved behaviors are combined with a manually programmed behavior that enables the robot to open doors in the environment. We demonstrate incremental transfer of evolved control from simulation to real robotic hardware, and we show how our approach allows for the reuse of behaviors in different tasks.

Evolutionary Policy Transfer and Search Methods for Boosting Behavior Quality: RoboCup Keep-Away Case Study

This study evaluates various evolutionary search methods to direct neural controller evolution in company with policy (behavior) transfer across increasingly complex collective robotic (RoboCup keep-away) tasks. Robot behaviors are first evolved in a source task and then transferred for further evolution to more complex target tasks. Evolutionary search methods tested include objective-based se...

A Natural Framework for Designing Bounce-less Controller for Robotic Contact Tasks

In robotic tasks where the manipulator has to make transition from free space motion to constrained one, there always exists a inevitable phase transition. A number of controllers have been proposed in the literature with various discussions on their practical implications. In this paper for the rst time a novel framework for studying design of controllers for robotic contact tasks problem is p...

Dynamic modeling and control of a 4 DOF robotic finger using adaptive-robust and adaptive-neural controllers

In this research, first, kinematic and dynamic equations of a 4-DOF 3-link robotic finger are derived using Denavit-Hartenberg convention and Lagrange’s formulation. To model the muscles, several springs and dampers are placed between the finger links. Then, two advanced controllers, namely adaptive-robust and adaptive-neural, which can control the robotic finger in presence of parametric uncer...

Speeding Up Online Evolution of Robotic Controllers with Macro-neurons

In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to the online evolution of robotic controllers. We propose accelerating and scaling online evolution to more complex tasks by giving the evolutionary process direct access to behavioural building blocks prespecified in the neural architecture as macro-neurons. During task execution, both the structure and the parameters of macro-neurons and of the en...
